Book Lesson

1. What to bring and wear and other requirements.

Participants must be at least 6 years old. Participants should wear tennis shoes and exercise clothing such as long pants without pockets, and a t-shirt. FIT will supply the protective clothing and equipment required to participate.  Please bring a water bottle. Disinfectant wipes will be available to wipe down the equipment before and after use.

2. What to expect from this lesson

This lesson is designed to give an overview of basic fencing movements. Students are generally exposed to only one weapon during this lesson. This may be foil or epee depending on the instructor.  Students will usually be put through a series of fencing related exercises and taught how to move on the fencing strip. The last portion of the lesson will allow the students to participate in a fencing bout with another attendee or the instructor.

3. What is next after this lesson

The beginning level classes are a bit more in depth than the introductory class. Students will perform more drills, footwork, and other activities to prepare for fencing, and do less bouting with an opponent.  We supply all the equipment the fencers need until they are ready to start competing outside of the club.  (Prices listed below are for club membership and training fees; these are subject to change.)

The next step is generally one of our beginner fencer programs which you may register for in the next section:

  • Musketeer - Youth beginner fencers under 10 years old are in our Musketeer program that is specially designed for their developing muscles. The class is 60 minutes.  ($175/month plus $20 initial admin fee)
  • Bronze - Children over 10 and under 15 years old are usually put into our Bronze beginner class which meets once per week for 90 minutes.  ($210/month plus $20 initial admin fee)
  • Beginner Youth - this is an add-on group training class that is for those who want to fast-track to competitive programs. The group meets an additional 2 hours per week for a more intensive training session. Students are allowed to open fence with the approval of their coach with Silver and Gold level fencers. ($55 per month)
  • Silver is our intermediate level program. Fencers generally start competing in local and Regional tournaments.  Silver students generally start adding private lessons to their monthly program.  Silver meets 3 times per week for 1-1.5 hours each session.  ($250/month plus $20 initial admin fee; private lessons in addition to program)
  • Adult Fitness - Students 15 and older are usually assigned to our Adult Beginner classes. These beginner group classes are designed to expose the fencers to both foil and epee.  Fencers meet Monday and Wednesday, 7-8PM, and Saturday noon-1pm.  ($210/month plus $20 initial admin fee)
  • Gold Competitive Team - the Gold Team members are an annual commitment coinciding with the USA Fencing season.  These students compete at the Regional, National, and International levels.  Many are trying to use fencing to make their college applications stand out; a few are trying to make the National Team.  This requires a tremendous commitment of finances and time for the student, parent and coach.  Gold Team members train up to 6 times a week for 2-4 hours each day.  The group class meets Monday through Friday 6-7pm and fences afterward. Many of these students use fencing for off-campus PE. If you are interested, contact your school administration office for forms and instructions.  Because we have multiple instructors, we have Mrs. Brenda Waddoups assigned as our off-campus PE Coordinator. She will sign your forms for FIT.  ($360/month plus $20 initial admin fee; students are expected to take 1-2 lessons per week for an additional fee)

Private lessons are not required for beginner students; however, private lessons will help the student progress faster. Private lessons may be added at anytime and scheduled through our member only Student Area on this website.

Students advance in the program depending on their skill set and ability to participate in the next level physically and mentally.  Advancement is by coach recommendation only and has nothing to do with the length of time a student has been in a program.

4. Ready to sign up! Here are the steps:

  - This is a multistep process that requires approval from the Office Staff at two stages.

  1. On this website, click on the “Student Area” tab at the top of the page.  You will be asked to create a login and password.
  2. After you have created the login and password, email info@fenceintexas.org and let us know you have completed step 1.  We will grant you access to the Student Page and let you know you may go to back to the Student Page and follow the 3 steps to the Waiver Section.
  3. Participating Adults without participating dependents  should select "Adult without Dependents."  Participating Adults with participating dependents should select the right side, "Adults with Dependents."
  4. Toward the bottom of the waiver will be an opportunity to select the group class.

  • Musketeers - ages 6-9 years old; Saturdays 9-10am
  • Bronze - Beginners ages 10-14 years old; Saturdays 10-1130am
  • Silver - Advanced beginner to Intermediate ages 9-14 years old; 3 days per week, schedule depends on weapon
  • Adult Fitness - Beginner adult ages 15 and older; Monday/Wednesday7-8pm, Saturday noon1, and open fencing any day after 7pm with coach approval.

Once you have completed the Waiver, we will be notified by Clubworx and we will approve the waiver request, prorate the first month as necessary, and set up your recurring charge.  Your credit card will be charged on the 1st of each month.  After the first month, no other month is prorated.

Things to know when signing up:

  1. The waiver agreement is your fencer contract.
  2. We prorate the first month of membership only. Any month after that is not prorated.
  3. If you attend 1 day or 31 days, you pay for the entire month, just like any gym or fitness center.
  4. We require a 30-day written notice to stop your membership, again like any gym or fitness center.  For example, if you will miss the month of July, the Business Office must receive written notice by May 31st.  If your notice arrives on June 1st, you will be required to pay for the month of July.
  5. Gold Team member summer hiatus - Gold Team members are on an annual program.  Many Gold Team members also travel overseas during the summer months.  The Board of Directors approved a reduction of fees for summer hiatus of 50% if a 30 day notice is received by the Business Office.  This is to ensure the coaches are paid through the summer slump.
  6. There are no make-up days.  Memberships are priced on a 4-week month.  Some months have 5 weeks. These are days we do not charge for and are considered makeup days for times you will miss due to illness, travel inclement weather, and other items.
  7. Medical hiatus is granted with proper medical documentation (such as you would take to school), granted for full month off, and considered on a case-by-case basis.
