In loving memory of… Eric Morton Wang ~ 09/18/84 - 04/09/02 ~

Eric Wang Memorial Scholarship

Eric Wang was a member of the Fencing Institute of Texas’ and St. Mark’s Men’s Epee Teams. Eric had an effusive smile and demeanor. He walked through life with an air of confidence, but a humbleness that reached out to everyone he met. His competitive spirit led him to fencing and track, and guided him through academic achievements. Eric was a tremendous athlete and gifted student. He embraced life and all those around him as his equal, and gave of himself effortlessly and graciously.

"With so many lessons left unfinished, Eric still led a good and joyful life. He lived life without any regrets. Although Eric physically is not with us right now, his spirit will always been in our hearts and our minds."

~ Brian Wang (eulogy excerpt)

Fencing Institute of Texas, in cooperation with the Wang family, dedicates the Wang Memorial Fencing Tournament to Eric’s memory. Proceeds from this event are set aside for the scholarship fund. FIT publicly thanks Coach David Sierra and Cutting Edge Fencing Club for their support through tournament proceeds to the Scholarship fund and to the other area coaches and fencers who make this tournament possible year after year, not only by participating, but by providing tournament support.

"…let me express my sincere appreciation to the Wang Family and the committee for awarding me with this generous fencing scholarship. It is a great honor for me to be part of Eric’s legacy."

 ~ Andrew Jung, 2009 Recipient

"Thank you for the tremendous honor of being named as a 2008 recipient of theEric Wang Memorial Scholarship. ... Although I was never afforded the opportunity to meet him in passing or on the fencing strip, we share a love for competition and life. Vince Lombardi, one of the most decorated and respected football coaches of all time, once said, 'The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.' I believe that is how Eric lived his life, with never ending enthusiasm for fencing, and love for his friends and family. Eric is a role model for all of us, and as I continue my journey as a fencer and scholar, I will continue to remember the values he embraced."

~ Andrew Simon, Duke University Class of 2010

"I would like to thank you for awarding me this generous fencing scholarship. It means a lot to me to know that someone could look at my fencing career and deem it worthy of such a prize. I shall continue to improve myself through the sport and work my hardest to become the best fencer I can. Eric will be an inspiration as I continue to work at school and at fencing."

~ Paul Herin, 2005 recipient
